Primary Prevention in Human Services

Currently, human services are most often positioned to respond to crises (such as a mental health crisis, family disruption, or eviction) rather than being established, connected, or resourced with the approaches and opportunities to prevent them from occurring.

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is exploring how to advance the use of primary prevention in human services, to create opportunity, support, or intervene before negative health or social outcomes occur.
